Koyaanistocksi

Pittsburgh-based Jesse England just released a reconstruction of the trailer for 1982 documentary Koyaanisqatsi. The documentary was directed by Godfrey Reggio with cinematography by Ron Fricke (who went on to direct the awesome Samsara). And while Reggio’s biography at the time said he was more “interested in the impact of the media in conveying ideas rather than promoting commodities,” Jesse has remade the original trailer shot-by-shot with watermarked stock footage that’s currently available to buy.

Here’s the original trailer (below) if you’re unfamiliar.

Godfrey Reggio currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and is in the early stages of producing a film about the negative impact that consumerism and fundamentalism have had on the world. One to look out for.

“I think it’s the tragedy of our time that we’re not aware of the affect of the manner in which we’ve adopted tools. Those tools have become who we are.”

  1. I find the quote at the end very touching and something that should definitely be thought about. I guess a lot comes down to things needing to slow down and people relearning how to enjoy simple pleasures.

    Super interesting, thanks David.
