Footage of Renoir and Monet painting

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), painting at home.

Also in the Renoir footage are his youngest son Claude, 14, who stands by to arrange the palette and place the brush in his father’s permanently clenched arthritic hand, and Sacha Guitry, the man who recorded both films and who appears midway through, sitting and talking with Pierre-Auguste.

Claude Monet (1840-1926), painting in one of his flower gardens in Giverny. Half a million people visit Monet’s gardens each year during the seven months that they’re open.

The footage was filmed for Sacha Guitry’s 1915 film Ceux de Chez Nous, or “Those of Our Land.”

  1. Hi David, thank you for sharing these these short films. I found them very moving, especially the Renoir. Like you I had no idea that they even existed. I’m going to share your page with my cousin who is a painter and some other friends. Lovely blog, congratulations.

    1. You’re very welcome, Joanne.

  2. This movie was made by Sacha Guitry when he was very young. He also visited Auguste Rodin, Edouard Manet, Edmond Rostand (Cyrano de Bergerac), Edgard Degas, Camille Saint-Saëns and many more… in one documentary called “Ceux de chez nous”.
He explains (in French) that Rodin was saying, “Tell me when your camera will be on, so I stop moving”.
Have a look on Youtube, and enjoy!
Sorry if my English is not perfect, but… I’m French!
