Artfully visualising our humanity

In his TED talk, Aaron Koblin talks about some projects he’s been working on that reflect on our lives and our systems. Imaginative viewing.

Flight Patterns. Mapping Airplane traffic over North America during a 24 hour period.

Flight Patterns AtlantaAtlanta airport Flight Patterns, coded by altitude.

The Wilderness Downtown. A personalised Google Street View music video for Arcade Fire (you’ll need to use the Chrome browser). Type in your address and it creates a music video unique to you.

The Sheep Market. A crowdsourcing art project created using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk.

Bicycle Built For 2,000. Another (creepier) Mechanical Turk assignment.

The Johnny Cash Project. A superb global animation collaborative.

  1. The project with the $100 bill he did on ‘mechanical turk’ sounds quite interesting. It’s a good, cost effective way to find loads of people to help produce a large project. I think I might use ‘mechanical turk’ on my next self-initiated project.

Oh and just incase you guys are interested, from 00:50 Aaron talks about using visual patterns. Stefan Sagmeister did a similar thing where he created a logo from the 3D shape of the “Casa Da Musica.” Here’s the link if you’re interested. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URmKSyKAK5w

  2. Visually compelling stuff. Well worth watching the videos.
