Boa Mistura: Luz nas Vielas

This street art project by Boa Mistura brightened my day.

“The work of Boa Mistura is all about the love of graffiti, colour and life. This group of five Spanish artists is, as the name says, a good mixture. Arkoh, Derko, Pahg, Purone and Rdick have developed their work in different fields, applying both a diversity of styles and the different views of each member. From graffiti and mural painting, to graphic design and illustration, Boa Mistura want to give the world its colour back. 5 heads, 10 hands, just one heart.”

Their latest work, “Luz nas Vielas,” is in the São Paulo favela of Brasilândia. The artists painted the walls with bright colours, and used a visual trick similar to that of Julian Beever so the words appear to float when viewed from a certain angle. With words like “amor” and “firmeza” (love and stability), the project is in line with the group’s mission.

I’m sure the kids who joined in felt a real sense of ownership afterward. Maybe the colours will help with wayfinding, too.

  1. Actually I believe that type of perspective work was pioneered by George Rousse: http://www.georgesrousse.com/

Italian artist Felice Varini also does similar art: http://www.varini.org/reactualisation/rea-01.html

Finally some street art that really is artistic! Seriously though, this is quite minimal so the wash of colours and simple type work really well.

  3. The perspective thing is just one part. What is great about this is the colour and the words. It’s so single minded, so beautiful, so uplifting, so perfect for place and the smiles on the people who have done it says it all.

This has given people pride in where they live.

    That alone is Beautiful.

  4. Just look at the smiles on the kids faces. You can’t buy that, you can only create it

  5. Exactly what Lee said.

    Brilliant stuff.

  6. Love it. There is nothing quite like a splash of colour to brighten peoples lives up. A great piece of work.

  7. This whole project is simply incredible.

I love these kinds of stories. This is what it’s all about, what a way to bring a community together. The colours are vibrate and represent what life is all about. Love this!

  8. Great example of street art David – we have had a street artist doing the subways here in Basingstoke and they look really great (and have not been vandalized by other would be street artists).

  9. Is it me, or is there a claustrophobic effect created by this paint enveloping of entire areas of the street?

It should in theory open up a space by it all looking the same, but for some reason to me … it feels the opposite.

Nice idea for the advertising though, as the effect is bold and certainly interesting.

  10. As a quick update, Boa Mistura created a short documentary about the project. I’ve embedded it at the foot of the post.
